내레이션. 지난 6월 15일, 2018 Ari Project의 여섯 번째 무대로 ‘동방의 불꽃, 한국의 춤문화유산’ 공연을 LA한국문화원 3층 아리홀에서 개최하였습니다.

자막. The Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, Yeon Nak Jae and Korean Dance Heritage Commemoration had presented the 6th Ari Project series of this year at Ari hall, titled, ‘The Fire of the East, Korean Dance Heritage’ on June 15th, 2018.

오늘 ‘동방의 불꽃, 한국의 춤문화유산’ 무대는 한국 전통춤의 시조이자 뿌리라고 일컫는 한성준 선생님의 예맥을 잇는 한국의 최고의 중견무용가들이 한국 춤의 고품격의 진면목을 소개하는 아주 귀중한 자리가 될 것으로 기대가 됩니다.

자막. This event has great significance as it stages major dancers who continue the artistic tradition of Han Seong Jun, the very root of Korean traditional dance.

Young Duck Kyung - Taepyungmu(Kang Seon Yeong-typed)

‘Taepyungmu’, state-designated intangible cultural property No. 92, is a dance form staged by Han Seong Jun based on shamanist rhythm. It is a hope for rich harvest and reign of peace and features mature and lilting display of dance and rushing foot work with discipline. It is danced by Young Duck Kyung, the initiate of Taepyungmu.

국가무형문화재 제92호로 지정된 ‘태평무’는 한성준이 무속장단을 바탕으로 무대양식화한 춤이다. 나라의 풍년과 태평성대의 기원을 담고 있으며 의젓하면서도 경쾌한 춤사위와 절도 있게 몰아치는 발디딤새가 특징적이다. 태평무 이수자인 윤덕경이 춤춘다.

Lee Ae Ri - Seungmu

As a representative traditional dance with Junggoje artistic legacy, it is a designated intangible cultural property No. 27 in Chungcheongnam-do. Deeply instilled with local features, Sim Hwa Young-typed Seungmu is of a simple and elegant form through which we can see the original form of staged Seungmu. This stage is performed by Lee Ae Ri, a granddaughter of Sim Hwa Young who continues the artistic legacy of Junggoje dance.

중고제의 예맥이 흐르는 대표적인 전통춤으로 충청남도 무형문화재 제27호로 지정되어 있다. 심화영류 승무는 토속성이 짙게 배여 있으며 소박하고 단아한 형식으로 근대 무대화 초창기 승무의 원형을 엿볼 수 있는 춤이라할 수 있다. 중고제 춤맥을 잇고 있는 심화영의 외손녀 이애리가 승무를 선보인다.

Kim Young Chul - Barachum

‘Barachum’, one of Buddhist dances, is restructured and performed by Kwon Myeong Hwa, a Daegu-based master dancer. Barachum at Buddhist temple is of deep ritual and playerful aspects while this dance is remarkable for spatial aesthetics and liveliness of male dance. It is performed by Kim Yonung Chul from Daegu who studied under the master dancer Kwon Myeong Hwa.

불교무용 중 하나인 ‘바라춤’을 대구지역의 명무 권명화가 재구성하여 전하는 춤이다. 사찰의 바라춤이 의례성과 구도적 성격이 짙다면 이 춤은 다양한 공간미학과 남성춤의 활달함이 돋보인다. 명무 권명화에게 춤을 사사한 대구 출신 김용철이 이 춤을 선보인다.

Hong Ji Young - Taepyungmu(Han Young Suk-typed)

Taepyungmu is a representative traditional dance hoping for rich harvest and reign of peace. Devised by Han Seong Jun, the father of Korean traditional dance, it was originally a dance duo for king and queen. Han Young Suk-typed Taepyungmu is for king with uncluttered and graceful magnificence and features various rhythms and unique foot work. Hong Ji Young dances Taepyungmu transmitted through Han Seong Jun-Han Young Suk-Park Jae Hee.

태평무는 나라의 풍년과 태평성대를 기원하는 대표적인 민속춤이다. 우리 춤의 시조 한성준이 창안한 춤으로 원래는 왕과 왕비의 2인무 형식으로 추어졌다. 한영숙류 태평무는 왕의 춤으로 정갈하고 단아한 기품이 서려있으며 다양한 장단과 독특한 발놀림이 특징으로 꼽힌다. 한성준-한영숙-박재희로 전해지는 태평무를 홍지영이 춤춘다.

Bae Sang Bok - Sinmyeong

It is a work to express the energy of spring with all living things coming to life and inner mentality of bleak fall with dancing steps of transcendental realm from the perspective of vanity in life. It is performed by Bae Sang Bok, the last romanticist known in our time and the best student of master dancer Choi Hyun.

만물이 소생하는 봄의 기운과 가을의 스산한 내면심리를 인생무상이라는 관점에서 초월적 경지의 춤사위로 풀어낸 작품이다. 이번 무대에서는 우리시대 마지막 낭만주의자로 회자되는 명무 최현의 수제자인 배상복이 선보인다.

Yoon Mi Ra - Jinsoe dance

윤미라 - 진쇠춤

Transmitted around Hwaseongjaeincheong, ‘Jinsoe dance’ is a traditional dance based on a theory that magistrates throughout the country used to dance holding Jinsoe. Yoon Mi Ri who studied under Lee Dong An, a talented dancer at Hwaseongjaeincheong, restructured this dance into five-person format and she performs solo at this event.

‘진쇠춤’은 화성재인청을 중심으로 전승돼 온 전통춤으로 옛날 팔도 원님들이 진쇠를 들고 춤을 추었다는 설에서 유래한다. 화성재인청의 재인 이동안에게 이 춤을 사사한 윤미라가 5인무 형식으로 재구성하였으며 이번 무대에서는 독무형식으로 춤춘다.

Kim Chung Han - Sogochum

김충한 - 소고춤

It is a new dance masterpiece premiered by Jo Taek Won, the pioneer of Korean modern dance, with accompaniment of Korean traditional music’s Junggoje master Sim Sang Geon at Natural History Museum, New York in 1949. Based on ‘Sogochum’ photos and video materials housed in Yeonnakjae, Kim Chung Han reinterprets and performs who continues the dance legacy of Han Seong Jun-Han Young Suk-Jeong Jae Man.

한국 근대무용의 선구자 조택원이 중고제 국악명인 심상건의 반주음악에 맞춰 1949년 뉴욕 자연사박물관에서 초연한 신무용 명작이다. 연낙재에 소장된 조택원의 ‘소고춤’ 사진 및 영상자료를 바탕으로 한성준-한영숙-정재만의 춤맥을 잇고 있는 김충한이 재해석하여 선보인다.

질문. 공연에 대한 생각을 말씀해주세요.

I really enjoyed the show. I love more cultural things than K-pop. Everything about it was great. I loved how the dance actually fit in with the history of Korea. And it really shows different elements and also how different genders definitely play a part even within the dance.

자막. 공연 정말 잘 봤어요. 저는 K-pop 보다 한국의 전통 문화에 더 관심이 많거든요. 공연의 모든 것이 좋았어요. 오늘 공연한 춤들이 한국의 역사와 어떻게 연관되어 있는지 알 수 있었고, 춤마다 색다른 요소를 보여줄 뿐만 아니라 남성과 여성의 춤이 어떻게 다른지 또한 알 수 있는 좋은 시간이었습니다.

I really enjoyed the experience because it was really a nice way to get in touch with my roots being a Korean American. We don’t really see a lot of these things and our upbringing being in America. But it was really nice to have a place like this. And Koreatown in Los Angeles really is a place to see where our heritage and our culture comes from.

자막. 한국계 미국인으로서 저의 뿌리인 한국의 전통문화를 경험할 수 있는 기회여서 좋았어요. 미국에서는 한국인이라는 것을 느낄 수 있는 기회가 별로 없는데, 한국문화원 같은 공간이 있다는 사실이 좋은 것 같아요. LA에 있는 코리아타운 역시 한국의 문화와 문화유산이 어디서 왔는지 잘 보여주는 것 같아요.
