내레이션. 지난 5월 25일, LA한국문화원은 제24회 LA한국문화원 현대미술공모전에 당선된 5명의 작가전 ‘주어진 조건’ 전시회를 개최하였습니다.


자막. The Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles proudly presented its 24thAnnual Juried Exhibition “Circumstance” which consists of a variety of contemporary artwork by five talented artists.


내레이션. 1993년도에 시작된 LA한국문화원의 현대미술공모전은 예술을 매체로 작가와 관람객, 그리고 타 커뮤니티와의 교류를 목적으로 하고 있으며, 미국 내에서 활동하는 작가들을 대상으로 실시하는 수준 높은 전시회로 LA한국문화원의 인기 있는 프로그램 중 하나입니다.


자막. Since its debut in 1993, the annual juried exhibition has become one of the most popular events at KCCLA. It has grown steadily through the generosity of its supporters and the enthusiasm of the artists who submit their work. This year’s exhibition includes the work of artists working across America. Regardless of the much dissimilarity in their environment, ideology, artistic character and economic background, these artists all share very important characteristics that has brought them to one place.

질문. 현대미술공모전에 대해서 말씀해주신다면?
Susan Gray / Juror
This is wonderful event. It’s prestigious exhibition. the others competed again one another to be eligible for the prizes. It was very difficult role for us as jurors to make the decision, Because of the quality of the work.


자막. 정말 멋지고 권위 있는 전시입니다. 많은 사람들이 공모전에 참여하여 입상 자격을 놓고 서로 경쟁했는데요. 작품 수준이 모두 뛰어나서 결정이 매우 어려웠습니다.

질문. 현대미술공모전 전시회 작품에 대한 전반적인 의견을 말씀해주신다면?

I was particularly struck by this work in relation to the meticulous process the artists went through in order to create the work.


자막. 특히 이번 전시품들과 관련해서 아주 디테일한 묘사를 위해서 노력했을 작가들의 노력에 감탄했습니다.

I feel extremely honored that I got an award at all. I didn’t really know that there were going to be awards. It‘s just an honor to be in the show regardless of the award.


자막. 정말 영광이에요. 사실 수상을 하게 될 거라고 전혀 생각 못 했거든요. 수상에 관계없이 전시에 참여하게 되어서 영광입니다.

안녕하세요, 저는 이한정 작가이구요. 소박하지만 아름답고 포근한 논밭 풍경에 매료가 되어서 그때부터 논밭 시리즈 작업을 하게 되었습니다.


자막. Hi, my name is Han Jeong Lee. I have been attracted by the aesthetics of beautiful, warm yet simple landscape of rice fields. That’s what initiated me to work on the series.?

질문. 수상소감 부탁드립니다.

안녕하세요, 저는 이성재라고 합니다. 추상회화를 움직이는 작업을, 2015년부터 진행하던 것을, 전시하게 되었습니다. 작가가 되는 게 꿈이고, 제가 작가라는 생각을 하기엔 (아직) 좀 어려운 것 같은데요. 계속 좋은 작업하다보면 사람들이 저를 좋은 작업하는 작가로 생각해주는 날이 올 거라고 믿습니다.


자막. Hi, my name is Sung Jae Lee. I have been working on abstract paintings in motion since 2015 and I’m happy that I’m given this opportunity to show my works. It’s still a bit early to call myself an artist, nevertheless, I believe continued efforts to create quality works would lead me to the direction where I will be deemed one by others.?

질문. 오늘 전시에 대해서 어떻게 생각하시나요?
Hogan Carterpl / Visitor
This cultural event is pretty impressive because it seems to have brought together different people who aren’t connected directly. But, through their art have really shown that we’re so similar as human beings. it’s a really neat event and I’m just really happy that I got to be a part of it, witness it, see all the art connections.?


자막. 직접 예술에 몸담고 있지 않더라도 모두를 한 자리에 모을 수 있었다는 점에서 매우 인상적인 문화행사였어요. 작품들을 보니 인간은 모두 비슷하다는 생각이 듭니다. 정말 근사한 이벤트라고 생각되고요, 이런 예술적 교감을 나눌 수 있게 되어 너무 기쁩니다.

질문. 오늘 전시에 대해서 어떻게 생각하시나요?

I think it’s very interesting. I came to many cultural events here and this one is striking me as very different.


자막. 흥미롭네요. 문화원에서 하는 다양한 행사에 참여했었지만, 이번 행사는 정말 색다릅니다.?

질문. 현대미술공모전에 대해서 말씀해주신다면?
Susan Gray / Juror
The cultural center provides this as a resource for the greater community. and that the work will be on the public display and we really want to make sure the work not only be tremendous artistic vibrancy that it will work together as a juried show.


자막. LA한국문화원은 사람들에게 이 행사를 더 나은 커뮤니티를 만들어 가기 위한 하나의 방법으로 제공합니다. 작품들은 누구나 관람할 수 있도록 전시될 것이고, 이 행사가 지역 커뮤니티에 큰 예술적 활력을 제공할 뿐 아니라 공모전으로도 앞으로 더 확실한 자리를 지켜나가기 바랍니다.
