(상단자막) 발음 챌린지 [ Pronunciation Challenge ]

수아> 한국어 발음이 어렵지 않아요? 외국인한테 쉽지 않은 것 같아요. 

Suah: Korean pronunciation seems like it would be pretty difficult for foreigners.

수아> 왜냐하면 외국인에게 한국어 이름을 얘기하면 항상 새 이름을 만들어 주시더라구요. 

Suah: For example, whenever I tell foreigners my name they always give me a nickname which is easier for them to pronounce.

수아> 그래도 여기 계신 분들은  한국어 공부를 오래하시고, 

Suah: That said, all of you have studied Korean for a long time

수아> 한국어를 전공하셔서 발음이 또렷하고 정확한 것 같아요. 

Suah: so your accents are really clear and easy to understand.

수아> 발음 얘기가 나온 김에 발음 챌린지를 해보도록 하겠습니다.

Suah: Since we’re talking about accents and pronunciation, let’s have a little challenge.

수아> 자유롭게 혀를 푸시구요. 얼굴 근육도 푸시고, 

Suah: You might need some time to relax the muscles in your tongue and face first.

수아> 팀을 나눠서 할 거에요. 네 분씩  한 팀이고

Suah: We’re gonna split up into two teams of four.

수아> 문장을 보여드리면 한 사람씩 돌아가면서 읽는 거에요.

Suah: And once we show you the sentence, you each need to take turns to read it out loud.

….

수아> 첫 번째 문장 보여주세요. 

Suah: The first sentence, please!

(“철수 책상 철 책상”)

수아> 연습 좀 하시고요. 

Suah: Have some time to practice a bit first.

티파니> 우리 파이팅해.

Tiffany: Fighting! (TN: A word used often to mean “Let’s do our best!”)

수아> 이 쪽 팀은 파이팅 없나요?

Suah: This team isn’t going to do that?

스테파니> 파이팅! 파이팅해요!

Stephanie: Fighting! Let’s do the best we can!

수아> 파이팅 없이도 자신있는 스테파니팀부터 시작하겠습니다.

Suah: Stephanie’s team seems to be confident so let’s start from them.

엘리> (틀림) 미안해요..

Ellie: I’m sorry…

수아> 자진납세 하셨기 때문에, 다음 티파니.

Suah: Since Ellie pointed out her own mistake, let’s move on to Tiffany!

(빌 틀림)

스테파니> ‘색상’이라고 했어요.

Stephanie: He said ‘Saeksang’!

수아> 땡! 스테파니 시작! 

Suah: Wrong! Stephanie, your turn.

(스테파니 팀 성공)

수아> 성공! 스테파니팀이 1점입니다. 자 다음 문장 보여주시구요.

Suah: Perfect! Stephanie’s team has earned 1 point. Please show us the next sentence.

(“대우 로얄 뉴 로얄“)

수아> 준비하시구요.

Suah: Are you ready?

수아> 시작해 볼게요. 이번에는 티파니씨부터 시작!

Suah: Okay, let’s start. This time we’re starting from Tiffany.

(티파니 땡)

스테파니> 대우 로얄...아, 못해요

Stephanie “Daewoo Royal…” Ah… I can’t do it.

수아> 땡! 티파니!

Suah: Out! Tiffany!

(티파니 땡)

(스테파니 팀 성공)

수아> 성공! 스테파니팀이 2점입니다. 갈수록 어려워지네요. 다음 문장! 

Suah: Perfect! Stephanie’s team is now in the lead on 2 points. The questions are getting harder as we go… next sentence!

(술렁술렁)

(“저기 저 뜀틀이 내가 뛸 뜀틀인가 내가 안 뛸 뜀틀인가”)

수아> 어려운가요?

Suah: Is it too hard?

스테파니> 어려워요.

Stpehanie: It’s pretty hard…

티파니> 포기하자!

Tiffany: Let’s give up!

캐스퍼>  포기하면 안돼.

Kaspar: There’s no giving up!

수아> 그러면 첫 두 문장만 해 볼게요. 

Suah: Let’s try just doing the first two lines.

수아> 연습을 잘 안하고 있는 스테파니씨부터 시작!

Suah: The person doing the least practice gets to go first! Stephanie, start!

(스테파니, 로저 통과. 엘리 땡)

수아> 땡! 자,  티파니씨.

Suah: Wrong! Okay, Tiffany your turn.

(티파니 팀 성공)

수아> 성공! 고생하셨어요. 2대 1 이에요. 다음 문장 보여주시구요.

Suah: Pass! It was tough, but you made it. The score is now 2 to 1. Next sentence, please!

티파니> 이거 좋아

Tiffany: I like this one!

(“멍멍이네 꿀꿀이는 멍멍해도 꿀꿀하고 꿀꿀이네 멍멍이는 꿀꿀해도 멍멍하네”)

수아> 지금 2대1이니까 티파니 팀 먼저 기회를 드릴게요.

Suah: As the score is 2 to 1 now, we’ll give the first chance to Tiffany’s team.

(티파니 팀 성공)

수아> 성공! … 지금 2대2 박빙이 됐는데 마지막 문장이에요. 

Suah: Pass! Now we have a draw of 2 points each, this will be the last sentence.

(“내가 그린 구름 그림은 새털구름 그린 구름 그림이고 네가 그린 구름 그림은 깃털 구름 그린 구름 그림이다.”)

수아> 이번에는 2대2 박빙이고 마지막 문제니까 순서를 가위바위보로 정할게요. 

Suah: Since both teams are on equal footing and this is the last sentence, let’s decide who goes first by playing Scissors, Paper, Rock.

수아> 엘리씨랑 빌씨가 가위바위보 해 주세요.

Suah: Ellie and Bill, can you do the honours?

수아>  ‘안 내면 술래 가위바위보’하면 내는 거에요. 

Suah: You have to put out your choice once you say ”Ahn nae myun soollae gawi bawi bo”.

다같이> 안 내면 술래 가위바위보! (엘리 이김) 

Everyone: “Ahn nae myun soollae gawi bawi bo!”

수아> 스테파니팀부터 시작해볼게요. 

Suah: It looks like we’re starting from Stephanie’s team then!

(스테파니팀 성공)

수아> 오 성공~! 그런데 왜 이렇게 분위기가 우울해요? 너무 힘들었나요?

Suah: Wow, perfect! But why do you all look so depressed? Was it too exhausting?

(일동 웃음)

수아> 티파니씨 팀은 죄송해요.

Suah: Sorry to Tiffany’s team.

캐스퍼> 찬스 없었잖아요.

Kaspar: We didn’t even have a chance!

수아> 그러니까요. 스테파니팀이 한 번에 성공을 했네요. ... 

Suah: Right, Stephanie’s team got it in one shot…

수아> 발음 챌린지는 스테파니팀이 우승한 걸로!

Suah: Stephanie’s Team are the winners!

티파니> 인정할게.

Tiffany: They were pretty good.

(상단자막) 경상도 사투리 퀴즈

[Gyeongsang-do Dialect Quiz ]

수아> 한국어 발음 연습을 해봤는데 한국어에 사투리도 있잖아요. 

Suah: We’ve tried practicing our pronunciation, but Korean has different dialects as well, right?

수아> 사투리, 들어봤어요?

Suah: Have you heard any dialects before?

티파니> 부산사투리. 

Tiffany: Yeah, Busan dialect!

티파니> 오빠 밥 뭇나.

Tiffany: Oppa, have you eaten yet? (In Busan dialect)

수아> 경상도 오빠를 만났었나봐요.

Suah: Looks like you’ve met a guy from Gyeongsang-do before!

수아> 빌씨가 경상도 사투리를 기가 막히게 구사한다고 들었어요. 맞나요?

Suah: Bill, I heard your Gyeongsang-do dialect is pretty amazing.

빌> 조금

Bill: A little.

수아> 어떻게 경상도 사투리를 알게 됐어요?

Suah: How did you find out about Gyeongsang-do dialect?

빌> 부산에서 온 친구에게 조금 배웠어요.

Bill: I learnt a little bit from my friend from Busan.

수아> 막간을 이용해서 사투리 퀴즈를 준비해 봤어요. 

Suah: I’ve prepared a short dialect quiz for us to do today.

수아> 경상도 사투리를 잘 하시는 빌씨가 문제를 읽어주면 

Suah: Bill will read out the expressions in Gyeongsang-do dialect,

수아> 그게 무슨 뜻인지 맞춰보는 거에요. 첫 번째 문장, 읽어주세요.

Suah: all you need to do is find out what the meaning is. Bill, please read out the first phrase!

빌> 첫 번째는 ‘가가 가가’

Bill: The first one is “Gaga Gaga”

(티파니 손 번쩍)

티파니> 갈까 갈까?

Tiffany: “Let's go, let’s go”?

수아> 땡!

Suah: Wrong!

카산드라> 그가 그야?

Cassandra: “Is he him”?

수아> 땡 

Suah: Wrong!

스테파니> 갈까 말까?

Suah: “Should we go or not?”

수아> 아니에요. 

Suah: Nope.

카산드라> 아 이거 들어본 적 있는데...그 아이가 그 아이냐?

Cassandra: Oh I’ve heard this before… “That’s that person?”

수아> 맞아요?

Suah: Is it right?

빌> 맞아요!

Bill: It’s right!

스테파니> 아~ 그 아이가 그 아이니

Stephanie: Ah! “That’s that person?”

수아> 다음 문장 읽어주세요.

Suah: Let’s try next one.

빌> 은다

Bill: “Eun da”

로저> 아니에요?

Roger: that means... “Is it wrong”?

빌, 수아> (당황) 맞아요~

Bill, Suah: Correct!

수아> 좀 비슷했죠? 억양에서 그 뉘앙스를 알 수 있었던 것 같아요. 

다음 문장?

Suah: It’s a bit similar right? The intonation carries some of the same nuance. What’s the next phrase?

빌> 억수로

Bill: “Eoksooro”

캐스퍼> 많이?

Kaspar: “A lot”?

수아> 오~ 맞았어요

Suah: Wow, that’s right.

캐스퍼> 이거 응답하라 드라마에 많이 나왔어요. 억수로 좋다.

Kaspar: They used this word a lot in the TV show “Reply 1999”. “I like it a lot”.

수아> 잘하는데요? 다음 단어요.

Suah: You guys are pretty good at this! Let’s try the next one.

빌> 똑디해라!

Bill: “Ddokdi Haera!”

스테파니> 똑바로 해라.

Stephanie: “Do it properly!”?

수아> 맞았어요! 이건 ‘똑’글자 에서 유추를 할 수 있었던 것 같아요. 

Suah: Correct! This one seems to be easy to guess since the first characters are the same.

수아> 똑바로 해라라는 뜻이에요.

Suah: It does mean “Do it properly” indeed.

빌> 마지막. 만다꼬!

Bill: Last one! “Mandaggo!”

스테파니> 맞다고?

“It’s right!”?

빌> (절레절레)

카산드라> 뭐한...

Cassandra: “What are…”

빌, 수아> 오 비슷했어!

Bill, Suah: You’re close!

카산드라> 뭐할..거야?

Cassandra: “What are… you going to do?”

수아> 거의 비슷했어요

Suah: You’re really close.

캐스퍼> 뭐 때문에 그래?

Kaspar: “What are you doing that for?”

수아> 맞는 것 같아요. 비슷한 뜻이죠? 무슨 뜻이에요?

Suah: That sounds about right. The exact answer is really similar isn’t it? What is it?

빌> 뭐하려고

Bill: “What for”

수아> ‘만다꼬 그라노’ 이러면 ‘뭐하려고 그래요’ 이런뜻이에요. 

Suah: If you say “Mandaggo Keuranoh” then it means something along the lines of “What are you doing that for?”

수아> 단어도 조금씩 다르고 억양도 다르죠. 

Suah: Both the words themselves and the pronunciation are a bit different to standard Korean, aren’t they?

수아> 스테파니씨 대구에서 살았다고 들었었는데 사투리 할 줄 알아요?

Suah: I heard you lived in Daegu, Stephanie. Do you know a bit of dialect?

스테파니> 이제 거의 다 까먹었는데... 예를 들면.. 뭐라고 씨부려쌌노! 

Stephanie: I forgot most of it but for example… “Mworago Sshibooryeossatno”

(모두 놀람. 오오~~)

스테파니> 왜요? 나쁜 말이에요?

Stephanie: Why why? Is this rude?

수아> 나쁜 말은 아닌데요. 발음이 욕인 줄 알았어요. 

Suah: It’s not rude, but from your pronunciation I thought you were swearing for a second.”

(일동 웃음)

스테파니> 학생들이 나한테 가르쳐줬으니까..

Stpephanie: My students taught me this so…

수아> 학생들이요? 어떤 학생들이요?

Suah: Students? What students?

스테파니> 고등학교에서 영어 선생님으로 일했었거든요. 

Stephanie: Oh I worked at a High School teaching English.

스테파니> 가끔씩 학생들이 저에게 대구 사투리를 가르쳐줬어요. 

Stephanie: Every now and then my students would teach me words in Daegu dialect.

스테파니> 할 수 있!습니다. 할 수 있!어요. 이렇게 말했어요. 

Stephanie: I can DO it. I can DO it. They talked like this.

(상단자막) 호주 사투리

[Australian Dialects ]

수아> 호주에도 사투리가 있어요?

Suah: Does Australia have different regional dialects?

사이먼> 멜번에서 온 사람들은 억양이 다른 것 같아요.

Simon: People from Melbourne speak a little differently.

스테파니> 시골에서 온 사람은 발음이 달라요.

Stephanie: People from the countryside have different pronunciation, too.

사이먼> 발음이 조금 달라요.

Simon: Yeah, the accents are a little different.

로저> 콧소리...

Roger: A little bit nasally…

스테파니> 할아버지 억양...

Stephanie: The intonation’s a bit like an old man…

캐스퍼> G’day mate! 이런 거

Kaspar: “G’day mate!” kind of like this.

(일동 ‘오~’, ‘아~’)

스테파니> 캐스퍼는 브리즈번에서 오셨잖아요. 브리즈번에서는 발음이 더 센 거 같아요.

Stephanie: You’re from Brisbane, right Kaspar? I think people from Brisbane tend to have pretty strong accents.

스테파니>우리 할아버지는 발음이 조금 강한 편이에요.

Stephanie: My grandfather’s accent is quite strong.

수아> 그렇죠. 나이가 많은 분들이나, 지방에서 온 사람들은 

Suah: Yeah, I think both Australia and Korea are similar in that regard.

수아> 억양이 강한 면이 있는데, 그건 호주든 한국이든 똑같은 것 같아요.

Suah: Older people and people from regional areas have more thick accents.
