Suah: Hello everyone, thank you for joining us!

수아> 오늘 저희가 주시드니한국문화원 사랑채에 자리를 했는데요. 

Suah: We’re coming to you from the Korean Cultural Centre in Sydney’s Hanok today.

수아> 오늘 처음 만났으니까 각자 간단히 소개 해볼게요. 티파니씨부터.

Suah: Since it’s our first time seeing each other, let’s start by briefly introducing ourselves. Let’s start from Tiffany.

티파니> 안녕하세요. 티파니에요. 반갑습니다. 저는 지금 대학생이에요.

Tiffany: Hi. My name’s Tiffany and I’m a university student. It’s a pleasure to meet you.

캐스퍼> 안녕하세요, 저는 캐스퍼입니다. 

Kaspar: Hi everyone, my name’s Kaspar.

캐스퍼> 저는 브리즈번에서 온 회사원입니다.

Kaspar: I’m from Brisbane and I’m an office worker.

카산드라> 안녕하세요, 저는 카산드라 입니다. 저도 대학생입니다.

Cassandra: Hi, my name is Cassandra and I’m also a university student.

빌> 안녕하세요. 저는 빌입니다. 병원에서 약사에요. 반갑습니다.

Bill: Hi, I’m Bill and I work as a pharmacist in a hospital. It’s nice to meet you all.

사이먼> 안녕하세요 저는 사이먼 입니다. 

Simon: Hi, I’m Simon.

사이먼> 병원에서 청력 검사하는 일 하고 있어요.

Simon: I work at a hospital; my main job is administering hearing tests.

엘리 > 안녕하세요 엘리라고 합니다. 맥쿼리 대학교 대학원생 입니다. 

Ellie: Hello, my name is Ellie and I’m studying my Masters at Macquarie University.

로저> 안녕하세요 로저라고 합니다. 보험 회사에 다니고 있습니다.

Roger: Hi, I’m Roger and I work at an insurance company.

스테파니> 안녕하세요. 

Stephanie: Hi.

스테파니> ok, 안녕하세요 저는 스테파니라고 합니다. 

Stephanie: OK, hi, my name is Stephanie.

스테파니> 지금 대학원에서 교육을 전공하고 있습니다. 잘 부탁드립니다.

Stephanie: At the moment I’m studying Education at university. It’s a pleasure to meet you.

수아> 반갑습니다. 오늘 전통 가옥에 모였잖아요. 정말 예쁘지 않아요?

Suah: It’s great to meet you all. So today we’ve all come together in this traditional house, isn’t it beautiful?

티파니, 캐스퍼> 정말 예뻐요.

Tiffany, Kaspar: Yeah! It’s really beautiful.

[How Does it Feel to Wear Hanbok? ]

수아> 특별하게 한복을 차려입어 봤는데.. 한복 입어보니 어때요?

Suah: Since we’ve all dressed up in Hanbok for the occasion, what does it feel like to try one on?

스테파니> 저는 이번이 두 번째에요. 인상적이고 예뻐요.

Stephanie: This is actually my second time to wear Hanbok. It’s really striking and beautiful.

수아> 카스씨 머리에 꽂은 거 뭐에요?

Suah: Cass, what’s that you have in your hair?

카산드라> 이건 머리띠인데요. 어울리는지 잘 모르겠네요.

Cassandra: It’s a hairband. I’m not really sure if it looks good or not.

카산드라> 괜찮아요?

Cassandra: What do you think?

스테파니, 빌> 귀여워. 어울려요

Stephanie, Bill: It’s cute! It suits you!

카산드라> 감사합니다. 감사합니다.

Cassandra: Thank you, thank you.

로저> 색깔이 잘 어울려요.

Roger: The colour really suits you!

카산드라> 그렇죠, 색깔이 잘 어울리죠.

Cassandra: I know, right?

카산드라> 이런 색깔 마음에 들고, 한복을 입을 수 있어서 행복해요.

Cassandra: I really like this kind of colour and it feels great to be wearing Hanbok.

수아> 오늘 한복 처음 입어보신 분 있어요? 

Suah: Is there anyone who’s wearing Hanbok for the first time?

수아> 남자분들이 처음 입어보셨구나. 느낌이 어때요?

Suah: It seems like like most of the men are trying it for the first time! How does it feel?

사이먼> 왕이 된 느낌이에요

Simon: I kind of feel like a King. 

수아> 저희한테 왕 대접을 바라진 마세요 .

Suah: Just don’t expect us to treat you like one!

수아> 옷이 날개라는 말이 있잖아요. 

Suah: There’s the saying “The clothes make the man”, right?

수아> 다양한 색깔의 한복을 입으니까 다들 두 배는 더 멋진  것 같아요. 

Suah: It really feels like the different coloured Hanbok have brought out the best in you all!

수아> 어쩜 이렇게 한국말을 잘 하세요? 어떻게 한국어를 배우게 됐어요?

Suah: So how did you get to be so good at Korean? What made you become interested in learning it?

[The Reason You Started Learning Korean ]

사이먼> 저는 한국에서 4년 살았어요. 대학원도 다녔고, 

Simon: I actually lived in Korea for 4 years and did my Masters Degree there.

사이먼> 한국 친구들이랑 대화를 나누면서 한국말이 많이 늘었어요.

Simon: I improved my Korean a lot while talking with my Korean friends.

수아> 한국어 발음이 또렷하고 좋은 것 같아요.

Suah: Your pronunciation is good, it’s really clear.

수아> 로저씨가 한국어를 배우게 된 계기가 특별하다고 들었어요. 

Suah: Roger, I heard your reason for starting to learn Korean was pretty unique.

수아> 어떻게 한국어 배우게 됐는지 얘기해 줄래요? 

Suah: Can you tell us about it?

로저> 예쁜 한국 여자를 만났어요. 

Roger: I met a really pretty Korean girl.

로저> 그래서 그 여자와 친해지려고 한국어를 배우기 시작했어요.

Roger: So I started learning Korean to try and get closer to her.

캐스퍼> 멋있어요.

Kaspar: Wow, that’s cool.

수아> 사랑은 사람을 무언가 하게끔 하는 힘이 있나봐요. 

Suah: I guess love really has a way of motivating people.

수아> 지금 그 분 생각하시면서 얼굴이 빨개지시는 것 같은데... 

Suah: It seems like your face is getting red just thinking about her…

수아> 잘 됐어요? 

Suah: Did it work out?

로저> 사실은 그 때는 한국어를 잘 못해서...

Roger: Actually back then my Korean wasn’t that great…

카산드라> 그 사람 다시 만나야겠어요.

Cassandra: You should try to meet her again now then!

로저> 그래서 한국에 여러 번 갔었어요

Roger: So I’ve actually been to Korea a few times.

로저> 그 여자 만나려고 간 게 아니고 여행이었어요.

Roger: I mean, not specifically to meet her, but for holidays.

수아> 카스씨는 어떻게 한국어 배우게 됐어요?

Suah: Cass, how about you?

카산드라> 저는 케이팝을 많이 좋아해요. 

Cassandra: I love K-Pop.

카산드라> 특히 달마시안이라는 가수 그룹을 좋아하는데, 

Cassandra: In particular, I really like a group called Dalmatian.

카산드라> TV 에서 그들이 무슨 얘기하는지 궁금해서 한국어 배우기로 마음먹었어요.

Cassandra: I was really curious about what they were saying on TV shows so I decided to learn the language.

수아> 한류 열풍이 대단한 것 같아요. 

Suah:  The Korean Wave seems to be quite influential.

수아> 한국의 가수나 드라마, 영화를 보면서 한국에 흥미를 느끼고

Suah: From what I’ve seen, many people become interested in Korea through Korean music, TV shows and movies

수아> 그러면서 한국어를 배우게 되는 계기가 되는 것 같아요. 

Suah: And this motivates them to start learning the language.

수아> 한류 열풍이나 한국의 가수나 한국의 드라마를 보면서 

Suah: Did anyone else start learning Korean because of the Korean Wave,

수아> 한국어를 배워야겠다고 생각하신 다른 분 있어요?

Suah: like after listening to Korean music or watching Korean TV shows?

티파니> 저요.

Tiffany: I did!

수아> 티파니씨. 어떻게 한국어 배우게 됐어요?

Suah: How did you start learning, Tiffany?

티파니> 한국 음악이랑 한국 가수를 정말 좋아해요. 

Tiffany: I really love Korean music and singers!

티파니> 근데 제가 좋아하는 가수는 아저씨에요.

Tiffany: The singers I like are kind of Ahjussi (TN: Ahjussi generally means middle-aged or married men).

티파니> 김범수 아저씨, 이승철 아저씨

Tiffany: I like Kim Bum Soo Ahjussi and Lee Seung Chul Ahjussi.

수아> 김범수는 아직 결혼 안 해서 아저씨가 아닌데..

Suah: But Kim Bum Soo didn’t get married yet so he’s not really an Ahjussi...

티파니> 김범수 오빠...?

Tiffany: Then… Kim Bum Soo Oppa…? (TN: A respectful term used by females to refer to older males such as older brothers or older friends)

수아> 오빠죠. 오빠라고 불러주면 더 좋아하실 것 같아요.

Suah: Yeah, I think he would prefer to be called “Oppa”.

티파니> 그리고 카스처럼 대학교에서 한국어를 전공했어요.

Tiffany: I also majored in Korean at university like Cass.

수아> 그랬구나... 엘리씨는 어때요?

Suah: I see… how about you, Ellie?

엘리> 한국드라마를 보고 한국어의 아름다움을 느꼈어요. 

Ellie: I could really feel a sense of the Korean language’s beauty through Korean TV shows.

엘리> 왜냐하면 한국어에는 아름다운 웨이브가 있어요, 

Ellie: Korean has a kind of beautiful flow.

수아> 특유의 억양?

Suah: Because of the intonation?

엘리> 네, 한국어의 억양이 좋아서 한국 유학을 결정했었어요.

Ellie: Yeah, the way the language sounded affected my decision to study abroad there.

(상단 자막) 나만의 한국어 공부법

[My Special Way of Studying Korean ]

수아> 근데 외국어를 공부한다는 게 쉽지만은 않잖아요. 

Suah: Learning a foreign language can’t be easy, right?

수아> 여기 계신 분들은 한국어 발음도 좋고 한국어를 정말 잘하세요. 

Suah: All of you have great pronunciation and are really good at speaking Korean.

수아> 혹시 나만의 공부법 추천해 줄만한 게 있을까요? 카스씨?

Suah: Do you have any special way of studying to recommend to others? Cass?

카산드라> 이거 진짜 좋은 꿀팁입니다. 

Cassandra: I have a really good tip!

카산드라> 제가 케이팝을 많이 좋아했잖아요. 

Cassandra: You know I really like K-pop, right?

카산드라> 좋아하는 음악을 들으면서 가사를 외우면  잘 외울 수 있어요, 

Cassandra: Well, I found that while listening to K-Pop, memorizing the lyrics really helped me

카산드라> 새로운 단어도 익히고, 자연스러운 문장도 알게 되었어요. 

to learn new vocabulary and pick up natural expressions easily.

카산드라> 그리고 음악은 자주 들으니,  말할 때도 자연스럽게 나오더라구요. 

Cassandra: Listening to music often really helped me to speak more naturally.

카산드라> 아주 좋은 방법인 것 같아요. 

Cassandra: I think it’s a really good way to learn!

수아> 가장 좋아하는 한국 노래 한 소절 해 주신다면?

Suah: Can you sing a little bit of your favourite Korean song for us?

카산드라> 진짜 많은데... 저는 요즘 힙합에 빠져 있어요.

Cassandra: There’s so many… these days I’m really into Hip-Hop.

수아> 들려주세요. 불러줘! 불러줘!

Cassandra: Let us hear it! Sing for us, sing for us!

카산드라> 할게요, 할게요. 가사를 까먹을까봐...오케이.

Cassandra: Okay, I’ll try. I’m a bit worried I’ll mess up the lyrics… but I’ll try.

(노래 부름)

수아> 근데 무슨 노래에요?

Suah: What song was that?

카산드라> 다이나믹 듀오 Beyond the wall 이라는 노래에요.

Cassandra: It was ‘Beyond the Wall’ by Dynamic Duo.

수아> 저도 모르는 노래를 알고 계시네요. 대단하십니다. 

Suah: Wow, it’s impressive that you know the song that I don’t even know.

수아> 캐스퍼씨는 연세대 어학원 다녔다고 들었는데 그때 어땠어요?

Suah: Kaspar, I heard you studied at Yonsei University’s language school, how was it?

캐스퍼> 저는 교과서로 공부를 하는 것보다 

Kaspar: For me, rather than studying from textbooks

캐스퍼> 수업 후에 한국인 친구들이랑 함께 술 마시고 얘기하면서 

I’ve always learned better by going out with Korean friends after class

캐스퍼> 수업에서 배웠던 것을 연습하는 것이 가장 도움이 됐어요. 

and using the stuff I had learned that day while talking and having a few drinks together.

캐스퍼> 그래서 한국인 친구들을 많이 사귈 수 있었어요.

Kaspar: Because of that I was also able to meet a lot of Korean friends over there.

수아> 캐스퍼씨는 무슨 전공이에요?

Suah: What did you major in at university?

캐스퍼> 한국어.

Kaspar: Korean Language.

수아> 한국어 전공하신 분들이 굉장히 많네요. 뿌듯하네요.

Suah: A lot of you majored in Korean at university. That makes me feel proud.

수아> 엘리씨도 한국에서 공부한 적 있다고 들었는데 어땠어요?

Suah: Ellie, I heard you studied in Korea before too, how was it for you?

엘리> 제 생각에는 한국어를 공부하는데 몇 단계가 있어요. 

Ellie: For me personally, there were a few ways I learned Korean.

엘리> 제가 한국에 처음 갔을 때는 한국어를 하나도 몰랐거든요. 

Ellie: When I first arrived in Korea I couldn’t speak a word of the language.

엘리> 1단계로 한양대 어학당에서 한국어를 배웠어요. 

Ellie: So the first step was learning the basics at Hanyang University’s language school.

엘리> 2단계는 한국 친구들과 함께 술 먹고 놀아요. 그러면 일상생활 대화는 문제가 없어요.

Ellie: After that I started to go out and drink with Korean friends. In that way I could become comfortable with day-to-day conversations.

수아> 한국어 공부를 하는데 술이 빠지지 않네요. 

Suah: Drinking seems to be a common theme here…

수아> 친구랑 술 마시고 놀면서  한국어가 느는 경우가 많은 것 같아요.

Suah: It sounds like a lot of you improved your Korean by drinking and hanging out with Korean friends.

수아> 스테파니씨는 어떻게 공부했어요?

Suah: How did you study, Stephanie?

스테파니> 문화에 관심이 없으면 언어가 늘 수 없다고 생각해요. 

Stephanie: I think you have to be interested in the culture to get better at the language.

스테파니> 그래서 저도 드라마도 보고 노래도 들었어요. 

Stephanie: So I watched Korean TV and listened to Korean music.

스테파니>  제가 고등학생 때, 태국 친구가 동방신기를 소개시켜줬어요. 

Stephanie: When I was in High School my Thai friend introduced me to TVXQ.

스테파니> 그때 처음으로 한국에 관심을 가지게 되었고, 

Stephanie: That was when I first started to become interested in Korea.

스테파니> 대학생이 되어서 한국어와 일본어를 배우게 됐어요. 

Stephanie: I started to study both Korean and Japanese after getting in to university.

스테파니> 일본어를 공부하니까 한자를 이용해서 한국어를 공부했어요 

Stephanie: Because I also studied Japanese, Chinese characters helped me a lot while studying Korean (TN: Chinese characters are sometimes used in both Japanese and Korean).

수아> 한국어는 한자를 차용한  단어도 많으니까,. 좋은 방법이네요. 

Suah: That’s a great way to learn, since Korean has a lot of loan words from Chinese characters.

(상단 자막) 한국어 공부하면서 어려웠던 점

[Difficulties While Studying Korean ]

수아> 다들 한국어를 오랫동안 공부 하셨는데, 뭐가 제일 어려웠어요? 

Suah: You’ve all studied Korean for quite a long time, what was the most difficult thing for you?

수아> 비슷한 단어나 특별히 어려운 거 없었어요?

Suah: Did you have any difficulties with words that sound similar?

사이먼> 지금도 사전이랑 사진이라는 단어가 헷갈려요. 

Simon: Even now I get a bit confused between the words Sajin (Photo) and Sajeon (Dictionary).

사이먼> 거의 처음 배웠던 단어인데 여전히 헷갈려서 

Simon: Even though they were some of the first words I learned, they still confuse me.

사이먼> 말할 때마다 맞았는지, 틀렸는지 생각해야 해요. 

Simon: Whenever I use one of those words I have to think about whether I got it right.

사이먼> 단어가 비슷하면 어렵고.. 그리고 여전히 조사가 많이 어려워요.

Simon: Similar sounding words like that are difficult… I have difficulties with particles as well.

수아> 맞아요. 엘리씨는 존댓말 어렵지 않았어요?

Suah: Yeah, that can be difficult. Ellie, did you have any problems with formal Korean language?

엘리> 대학교를 다니면서 교수님이랑 전화 통화를 해야 했어요. 

Ellie: While I was at university in Korea, there were times when I had to talk to my teachers on the phone.

엘리> 그때 존댓말 진짜 어려웠어요. ‘응’ 안 되고, ‘네’라고 해야 돼요. 

Ellie: I had a lot of problems with that. For example, when you want to say “Yes” you should use “Nae” instead of “Eung”.

티파니> 대학교 다녔을 때 항상 교수님한테 존댓말 안 썼어요. 안녕~

Tiffany: When I was at university I always forgot to use formal language with my teachers too. Annyeong~

수아> 교수님 안녕? 

Suah: Like “See ya later teacher”?

티파니> 그래서 교수님이 문장 끝에 항상 ‘요’를 붙이라고 하셨어요.

Tiffany: So my teacher had to keep reminding me to end my sentences with ‘Yo’. 

티파니> 지금도 존댓말 어렵지만 점점 익숙해지고 있어요.

Tiffany: I still find formal Korean a bit difficult but I’m slowly getting used to it.

수아> 시간이 지날수록, 또 많이 써볼수록 존댓말에 익숙해질 것 같아요. 

Suah: As time goes by and you use it more, it’ll get easier.

수아> 빌씨는 어려운 점 없었어요?

Suah: Did you have any difficulties, Bill?

빌> 한국어에 비슷한 단어가 많아요. 

Bill: Korean has so many words that sound similar to one another.

빌> 친구에게 ‘부럽다’라고 말하고 싶었는데 ‘부끄럽다‘라고 말했어요. 

Bill: One time, I wanted to tell my friend I was jealous but I accidentally said I was shy.

티파니> 저도 있어요. 예전에 식당에서 족발을 시키고 싶은데 

Tiffany: I have a similar experience. Awhile back I went to a restaurant and wanted to order “Jokbal”…

티파니>  ‘쪽발, 쪽발’ 이렇게 발음 했어요. 욕 한 것 같아서 창피했어요.

Tiffany: But my pronunciation sounded like “Jjokbal”… it sounded like I was swearing so I was embarrassed.

스테파니> 예를 들면 언니오빠의 ‘ㅗ’, ‘ㅓ’ 발음이 되게 어려워요. 

Stephanie: For me the “O” and “Eo” sounds in the words for older brother and older sister are really hard.

스테파니> 왜냐하면 일본어랑 영어에 없으니까. 

Stephanie: Neither English nor Japanese has these sounds.

스테파니> 그래서 친구한테 ‘온니’, ‘어빠’라고 하기도 했어요. 헷갈려요. 

So I accidentally pronounced them “Onni” or “Eoppa” a lot. It’s really confusing.

수아> 아빠한테 오빠라고만 안하면 돼요. 

Suah: I think it’s okay as long as you don’t accidentally say Oppa to your Appa.
