[주워싱턴한국문화원] 한미추상미술 원로 작가 교류전 "Beyond the Rectangle"과 K-Culture 서포터즈

워싱턴 한국문화원의 갤러리에서 6월 한 달간 에서 추상미술 원로 작가 신시아 칼슨 Cynthia Carlson과 민병옥의 교류전시 “Beyond the Rectangle”이 열린다.

이번 전시에서 두 작가는 그림의 기본 개념인 단일 사각형의 구조를 응용하여 각자 자신만의 개념을 확장한 작품들을 선보인다.

칼슨 작가는 다양한 형태를 지닌 직사각형 캔버스들을 끼워 맞추며 불규칙한 폴립티크 (polyptychs / 여러 폭으로 연결된 제단화)를 창조했다. 민병옥은 프레임 안과 밖을 넘나드는 캔버스들을 덧대어 전통적 프레임의 경계를 확장한다.

두 작가의 작품은 분리된 전시공간이 아닌 한 공간 안에 양옆으로 함께 전시되고 있다.

전시 오프닝 리셉션 전에는 안호영 주미 대사와 워싱턴 케이 서포터즈 인사들이 먼저 찾아 작품을 감상했다. 두 작가가 직접 작품을 설명하고, 케이 서포터즈 인사들과 창의적 협력과 문화적 교류에 대한 이야기가 오갔다.

한국과 미국 두 작가의 작품을 한눈에 볼 수 있는 이번 전시는 워싱턴 한국 문화원에서 6월 30일까지 열린다.

내레이션:

The Korea Cultural Center Washington, D.C., welcomed two acclaimed abstract painters, Byoungok Min and Cynthia Carlson, for the June 2016 K-Art Gallery exhibition, “Beyond the Rectangle”.

Together, Carlson and Min explore creative ways of thinking beyond the rectangular canvas.

Carlson’s works combines a number of smaller painted canvases to form an asymmetrical polyptych, while Min expands the border of the traditional frame by pairing pieces of unstretched canvas. The two artists displayed their work in an alternating pattern, rather than divided into separated spaces.

Prior to the opening, a gathering of the locally designated K-Culture Supporters joined Korea’s ambassador to the United States, Ahn Ho-Young for a special preview. The artists gave a guided tour as the group discussed their mission of furthering creative collaborations and cultural exchange.
