허밍버드를 찾아서

현장음. 와, 허밍버드입니다.

자막. Wow, look it’s a hummingbird!

내레이션.

몸길이 5cm, 체중 1.8g 세상에서 가장 작은 새 허밍버드입니다.

주로 적도 부근과 중남미 지역에서 서식하는 허밍버드는

2월 중순부터 9월 초까지 캘리포니아 지역에서도 쉽게 볼 수 있는데요,

허밍버드라는 이름은 바로 빠른 날갯짓 때문에 붙여진 이름이라고 합니다.

1초에 약 53번의 날갯짓을 할 때 나는 소리 때문에 붙여진 이름이라고 하네요.

한국에서는 꽃 속에 꿀을 찾아다니는 모습이 꼭 벌과 같다고 해서 벌새라는 이름으로 불리고 있습니다.

이러한 빠른 날갯짓과 유연한 어깨 관절 덕분에

허밍버드는 공중에서 후진 비행은 물론 호버링이 가능한 유일한 새가 되었는데요.

저는 오늘 그 모습을 슬로우모션으로 담기 위해 샌디에고로 향했습니다.

Its body length is 5cm, and its weight is 1.8g.

The hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world.

Hummingbirds mainly live in the vicinity of the equator and in Central and South America.

You can easily see them in California from mid-February to early September,

The Hummingbird receives its name because of its fast wings.

The humming soundis made as it flaps its wings 53 times per second.

In Korea, it is called ‘beol-sae’ (hummingbird) because it looks like a bee (beol) looking for honey in a flower.

Thanks to these fast wings and flexible shoulder joints, hummingbirds are the only bird in the world that can hover, as well as fly backwards in the air.

I went to San Diego today to capture them in slow motion.

이곳은 로스앤젤레스에서 남쪽으로 약 200km 떨어진 곳에 위치한 샌디에고의 한 동물원입니다.

바로 이곳에 허밍버드가 살고 있는 큰 새장이 있다고 해서 찾아왔는데요.

지금부터 그곳을 찾아가보도록 하겠습니다.

자막.

Approximately 200km south from Los Angeles, the San Diego Zoo is located in San Diego, California.

We heard that this zoo has a big hummingbird aviary.

Let’s go look right now.

내레이션.

이곳이 바로 허밍버드가 살고 있는 곳입니다.

지난 2개월간 야생의 허밍버드를 찾아다니며 슬로우모션 영상을 담아보려 했지만, 모두 다 실패로 돌아가고 말았는데요.

오늘 바로 이곳에서 다시 한 번 시도해보기로 했습니다.

과연 이번에는 성공할 수 있을지,

허밍버드를 담기 위한 이야기가 지금부터 시작됩니다.

This is where hummingbirds live.

For the last two months, I tried to find wild hummingbirds to film them in slow motion, but all attempts were unsuccessful.

So today, I decided to try once again.

Hoping for a better outcome, the story of hummingbirds starts now.

내레이션.

이곳에는 허밍버드 뿐만 아니라 다양한 종류의 새들이 함께 살고 있었는데요.

푸른목휘파람새, 파라다이스풍금조, 보라꿀먹이새, 여름풍금조까지 다양한 종류의 새들이 함께 살아가고 있었습니다.

그럼 이제 본격적으로 허밍버드를 찾아보도록 할까요?

At the Kenton C. Link Hummingbird Aviary,

you can find hummingbirds as well many other types of birds,

such as Blue-necked Tanager, Paradise Tanager, Purple Honeycreeper, and Summer Tanager.

제일 처음 만나게 된 허밍버드는 코스타벌새입니다.

보는 각도에 따라 목 주변의 깃털이 보라색으로 보이는 것이 특징인데요,

이것은 수컷과 암컷을 구별하는 특징이기도 합니다.

수컷 허밍버드 목 주변의 밝은 색의 깃털은 암컷 허밍버드를 유혹하는 수단이라고 하네요.

허밍버드는 평상시에도 1분 동안 약 250번의 숨을 쉬고, 심장은 약 1,200번씩 뛴다고 합니다.

이러한 신체적 특징 때문에 허밍버드는 많은 열량을 필요로 하는데요.

하루 동안 자신의 몸무게의 절반에 달하는 설탕을 섭취해야 하기 때문에 약 10분에 한 번씩 식사를 한다고 합니다.

신기하게도, 허밍버드는 자신이 꿀을 먹었던 꽃이나 먹이통의 위치를 정확히 알 수 있는데요.

이는 먹이의 냄새를 맡는 방법으로 찾는 것이 아니라, 잘 발달된 시력을 이용하여 자신이 갔던 곳의 시각적인 정보를 기억하고 있다가 다시 찾아가는 거라고 합니다.

The first hummingbird is the Costa’s Hummingbird.

Depending on which angle you look at, you can see the purple feathers around their neck, and this is to distinguish between male and female birds.

It’s said that brightly-colored feathers around the male hummingbird’s neck works as a way to attract female hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds breath 250 times per minute, and their heart beats around 1,200 times per minute. And because of this particular characteristic, hummingbirds require a lot of energy throughout the day. Each day, a hummingbird’s sugar intake is about half of what they weigh, so these birds eatevery 10 minutes.

Surprisingly, hummingbirds can locate the exact location of where they have eaten.

And this is not done through olfactory senses, but is done with their exceptionally well-developed eyesight where they remember where they have been to find the location again.

이제 적당한 위치에 카메라와 삼각대를 설치하고 허밍버드를 기다려보도록 하겠습니다.

10분에 한 번씩 식사를 한다는 말은 거짓말이었을까요?

20분간 연속해서 촬영을 해보았지만, 카메라엔 아무것도 잡히지 않았습니다. 20분간 말이죠.

다시 돌려봐도 아무런 흔적도 찾을 수 없었습니다.

하지만 뭐 이제 시작이니까요, 다시 한 번 심기일전해서 허밍버드를 기다려봤습니다.

그런데 먹으라는 꿀은 먹지 않고 눈앞에서 얼쩡거리기 시작했습니다. 바로 눈앞에서 말이죠.

급하게 핸드폰으로라도 담아보려 했지만, 그것마저 쉽게 허락하지 않았습니다.

그러던 중 마침내 허밍버드가 나타났습니다.

하지만 이게 무슨 일 일까요, 이번에 카메라가 포커스를,

포커스를 끝내 맞추지 못해 실패로 돌아가고 말았습니다.

이렇게 한 시간, 두 시간, 허밍버드가 다시 나타날 때까지 그 자리에 가만히 서서 카메라 속 작은 액정만을 애타게 바라보고 있었습니다.

자막.

Now, I’ll set up my camera and wait for the hummingbirds.

Is it true that hummingbirds eat every 10 minutes?

Even after 20 minutes, nothing was captured on my camera.

For an entire 20 minutes!

I went back to watch the video again, but there wasn’t a single trace of a hummingbird.

But I kept my hopes up and continued to wait for the birds.

Finally, a hummingbird appeared in front of my camera, but instead of eating the honey, it kept flying in front of my face.

I tried to film with my phone camera, but it wasn’t easy.

That’s when my camera caught another hummingbird.

However, to my dismay, my camera couldn’t keep focus on the bird, which led to another unsuccessful try.

For the next few hours, I just stood there with my eyes squinted on the small screen of the camera, just hoping for a good shot.

현장음.

지금 네 시간째 같은 공간에서 허밍버드를 기다리고 있습니다.

두시…

가망이 없습니다. 가망이 없어요. 제가 원하는 샷을 잡을 수 있을 것 같지가 않아요. 지금.

이렇게 허밍버드가 많은데, 저기엔 안 옵니다. 제가 지정해둔 곳엔 절대 안 와요, 지금.

자막.

I’ve been waiting at this same spot for the past 4 hours.

It is now 2 P.M.

It all seems hopeless. I don’t think I’ll ever get to shoot the scene I want.

There are so many hummingbirds, but none for me.

Not a single bird is coming to where I am.

내레이션.

이렇게 허밍버드를 찾아 떠난 2개월간의 여정은 모두 실패로 돌아가 버리는 걸까요.

멀리서나마 허밍버드를 볼 수 있음에 감사해야하는 걸까요.

너무 지친 나머지 허밍버드에게 말을 걸기 시작했는데요.

자막.

Are my two months of the hummingbird quest coming to an end like this?

Should I just be thankful that I could see hummingbirds from afar?

Feeling devastated and tired, I started speaking to the hummingbirds.

현장음. 배 안 고프냐? 밥 먹어, 밥. 저기 아래 있는데..

자막. Aren’t you hungry? Eat something. It’s right down there...

내레이션. 갑자기 날기 시작하더니 정말로 식사를 하기 시작했습니다.

자막. Suddenly, one hummingbird starts flying and starts to have his meal!

내레이션.

허밍버드 담기에 성공한 뒤 혼자서 기뻐하고 있을 때쯤, 한 부부가 다가와 말을 걸기 시작했는데요.

그들은 시애틀에서 온 데이브, 다이앤 부부였습니다.

허밍버드 문신을 팔에 새길 만큼 이 부부의 허밍버드 사랑도 대단했는데요,

서로 이곳에 온 이유에 대해서 대화를 나누기도 하고 허밍버드에 대한 정보도 주고받았습니다.

자막.

After successfully filming the hummingbirds, I was celebrating on my own when a couple approached me and started talking to me.

They were couple from Seattle named Dave and Diane.

You could see their love for hummingbirds as they even had a hummingbird tattoo on their arm. We started talking about why we came here and shared information about these wonderful birds.

내레이션.

그렇게 2개월간의 허밍버드를 찾아 떠난 여정이 드디어 마무리되었습니다.

신기하게도 새장을 나오자마자 새로운 종의 허밍버드를 발견했는데요, 루퍼스 허밍버드입니다.

참 귀엽게 생겼죠?

그리고 동물원을 나가기 바로 직전 야생의 안나 허밍버드도 만날 수 있었는데요,

아주 운이 좋게도 꽃 속에 꿀을 찾으며 날아다니는 모습을 슬로우 모션으로 담을 수 있었습니다.

잠시 지켜보시죠.

Finally, the two month journey of the hummingbird quest came to an end.

As soon as I exited the aviary,

I found a new type of hummingbird called Rufous Hummingbird. Isn’t it adorable?

And right before I left the zoo, I was also able to see Anna’s Hummingbird.

With my luck,

I was able to film the bird flying around looking for honey in slow motion. Take a look.
